KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — While a surge in COVID-19 cases continues across Michigan, a Kalamazoo hospital is reporting that it is nearing capacity due to an increase in patients fighting the virus.
MLive reports that Bronson Methodist Hospital in downtown Kalamazoo recently reached 99% capacity with 49 COVID-19 patients along with eight patients who are in intensive care. Those numbers are much higher than a month ago when Bronson had 15 patients hospitalized there for the virus.
And another sign of the local impact from this recent spike in cases comes from Kalamazoo Public Library locations, which will all close for the rest of the week before resuming curbside services only beginning Monday. Library officials say the locations will reopen to the public after there is a significant decrease in new cases.
The state of Michigan reported another large amount of COVID-19 cases Wednesday, adding 8,015 to the pandemic total. Michigan now has a pandemic total of over 715,000 cases.
