Michael Staton and Martin Chilvers with MSU’s Extension offer Michigan soybean growers some advice on white mold management.
In the spring they advise selecting practices proven to reduce white mold when it happens but that will not reduce yields significantly if environmental conditions don’t favor the disease. These conditions include a susceptible host, presence of the pathogen and favorable weather. Also, check seed company catalogs for ratings of susceptibility to white mold.
Using small grain cover crops like oats, wheat or cereal rye can be helpful. In addition, reduction of planting rates can prove effective as it will decrease potential for lodging and plant-to-plant spread of the disease.
