A vigil for George Floyd and a rally for justice were held Monday night in downtown Kalamazoo.
It followed the first day in court for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Event organizer Corianna McDowell told WOOD-TV she wants to make sure people never forget what happened to George Floyd and she wants to see change across the country.
“I think it’s important that, not only just for us, but for the community as a whole, the country as a whole, that we let the family know and friends know that we are still supporting them. That we want justice.”
The group gathered in a circle at 8:46 p.m. on the corner of West Michigan Avenue and South Rose Street for a moment of silence. It lasted for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, which is the amount of time that Chauvin had his knee on the neck of Floyd, according to prosecutors.
