KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday marks St. Patrick’s Day, which is characterized this year by restaurants and bars being open at a reduced capacity under the pandemic.
As a result, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is reminding residents to be safe during the holiday.
He spoke with WKZO Wednesday morning.
“We want people to remember that this is a great holiday to celebrate, for one day a year, everybody is Irish,” Fuller said. “I cherish my Irish heritage, and I talk about it and celebrate it, but we want people to celebrate wisely.”
He pointed to the 2020 edition of the holiday, in which bars across the state were closed.
“Last year, we know that COVID spread a little more quickly because of the celebration,” Fuller said. “We want people to celebrate smartly, make sure you’re still doing some social distancing, masking in areas, as well as not overdrinking. This is a holiday that we’ve seen people overdrink in the past, and why anybody wants to overdrink green beer, I don’t understand.”
He told citizens to drink responsibly while having fun with friends.
