KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Tuesday, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners voted to open volunteer positions on the new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Community Advisory Committee.
According to County Documents, the agenda item would allow for the creation of this task force, of which nine positions are held.
“Creation of a 9 member Community Committee who will assist the Internal Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council with advancing DEI efforts and other subcommittees and focus groups as requested. Appointments to the committee will ensure that representation reflects the diverse community of Kalamazoo County.”
During the virtual meeting, County Administrator Tracie Moored said that community members are welcome to apply to be a volunteer on this committee.
“What this is, is to post on our advisory committee openings for members of the community to apply to be on the DEI Community Advisory Board,” Moored said. “They would then come before the board for an interview. The board would also look to this board to help create by-laws, but this is just to get the positions posted.”
She said that there would be three to one-year terms among those hired.
Commissioner Roger Tunier raised questions as to what the board would be comprised of, but Board Chair Tracy Hall said that would be determined once interview take place.
Vice Chari Tami Rey noted that this board would be different from the Reparations Task Force that was already created by the board.
Ultimately, the board voted 8-3 in favor of establishing this committee.
Future volunteer postings for the positions are now expected.
