KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Western Michigan University (WMU) students graduating in the spring will do so in a virtual commencement format.
WMU made the announcement on its official website, which can be read below:
“Western Michigan University will be hosting a virtual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 1, to celebrate spring graduates. While we wish we could share this special day in person, we plan to honor the graduates in a meaningful way that will reflect our immense pride in everything they have achieved throughout their time at WMU. The virtual ceremony will be as close to a traditional commencement experience as possible. More information, including viewing times, will be announced soon.”
Officials add that instructions on how to participate in the virtual ceremony were sent to graduates via email on Wednesday, February 24.
Any student who did not receive this email should call (269) 387-4300 or email registrar-info@wmich.edu.
The deadline to submit materials for inclusion in the ceremony is Friday, March 19, at 11:59 p.m.
Meanwhile, news outlets reported Monday that a petition by some WMU students is now circulating to hold an in-person ceremony instead.
At the time of this reporting, over 1,100 signatures have been recorded.
The petition can be viewed here.
