LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — More than 2,500 people in Kalamazoo County have already submitted applications for free or deeply discounted college tuition through the new Michigan Reconnect program.
Launched six weeks ago, the program is the largest effort in state history to make it easier and more affordable for residents, 25 or older without a college degree, to have an opportunity to earn a degree at their local community colleges. Over 47,000 people across the state have signed up since it launched on February 2nd. Kalamazoo, Kent, and Muskegon counties, respectively, have the largest number of applicants per capita in West Michigan.
On Monday, legislative and educational leaders, including State Senator Sean McCann of Kalamazoo, will hold a virtual event where they will discuss West Michigan applications for the program and the regional benefits for residents taking advantage of free community college tuition.
