Warmer temperatures in coming days will cause everyone to begin thinking of spring.
First, snowmelt and then thunderstorms direct attention toward rising water. A bipartisan group of senators including Michigan’s Gary Peters have introduced the Flood Level Observation, Operations and Decision Support – or FLOODS Act. It’s designed to improve NOAA’s forecasting and communication of flood, tornado and hurricane events.
It would establish partnerships with universities and federal agencies to improve water predictions and designate a hydrologist at each National Weather Service River Forecast Center. Also, the legislation encourages NOAA to evaluate windstorm measuring and tracking, improve flood mapping and improve modeling of freshwater outflow into the ocean.
