KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt the economy and has also made Kalamazoo’s long standing housing crisis even worse.
Last fall voters approved the “Homes For All” millage which will raise $50-Million over the next 8 years to tackle that issue. Board Chair Tracy Hall says they will hold a visioning workshop Tuesday afternoon with representatives from housing non-profits and other community leaders to get their ideas on how to effectively spend that cash to address homelessness and provide more affordable housing.
“I want to be held accountable for what we do with that spending. That will hit all four corners of our county. It is one the most challenging issues we face.”
Commissioner Dale Shugars doesn’t want the public to think they will be able to put a roof over everyone’s head. He’s trying to ease those expectations…
“Eight years from now, we’re kind of implying that there’s not going to be any homelessness. I just caution that we will do the best we can.”
The virtual workshop will begin at 4:00 p.m.. We will report any happenings as a result of the workshop.
