SAUGATUCK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After launching the search for a replacement school mascot last summer, the Saugatuck Public Schools board voted on a final choice Monday.
Going forward, the Saugatuck Public Schools mascot will be known as the Trailblazers, according to a report from WWMT Monday.
Board members had a choice between three different names. The final three had been narrowed down to the Trailblazers, the Storm or the Lakers.
According to WWMT, 240 ideas had been submitted for the name change, which was narrowed down to 90 before the final three were made available.
The decision to change the name stems from a discussion that started last year, during which school board members expressed that they would like to see the former “Indians” mascot retired.
In a statement released at that time, school officials said the idea was in light of similar changes in other school districts.
“Recent national events and tragedies remind the board that work remains to be done in creating an educational culture in our schools that rejects racism, discrimination and harassment in all its forms,” school officials said in the statement. “In this spirit of continual improvement for all students in the district, the board has determined that it is time to re-examine the use of our current team name and mascot.”
That discussion started after the Paw Paw school district changed its mascot name from the “Redskins” to the “Red Wolves.”
