SAUGATUCK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Another Western Michigan School district is considering a name change for its mascot.
Saugatuck Schools says it will consider changing its “Indians” nickname during an upcoming school board meeting.
Officials say that, in light of similar changes in other school districts, the time has come to reconsider the use of the Indians name.
“Recent national events and tragedies remind the board that work remains to be done in creating an educational culture in our schools that rejects racism, discrimination and harassment in all its forms,” school officials said in a statement. “In this spirit of continual improvement for all students in the district, the board has determined that it is time to re-examine the use of our current team name and mascot.”
Officials add that Julie Dye, a member of the Pokagon Band Potawatomi Tribe, has been invited to the meeting to provide education and awareness surrounding the misrepresentation of Native names.
The meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. meeting on Monday, July 20th. Saugatuck resident John Fox has also been asked to address the board.
The meeting will be open to the public via Zoom.
The board is encouraging community participation in the meeting. Any community members wishing to participate can contact ksharda@saugatuckps.com for access.
The news of this possible name change comes after the Paw Paw school district has changed its mascot name from the “Redskins” to the “Red Wolves.”
