KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Tuesday, Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford provided an update to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout through the area.
According to Rutherford, local health officials are doing a better job than most Michigan Counties. He says first responders, nurses and doctors have been inoculated, and right now, they are working on the elderly and teachers.
However, that will depend on availability of doses.
“Between the hospitals, us, the Family Health Center and pharmacies, we could get this knocked out by the fall, if, again, the availability of the resources are available.”
Rutherford says most local seniors have registered and their goal is to get 70 percent or more of them immunized before they move on to the next group.
“We’re not moving the needle overnight, but slowly but surely, the fact that we’re 22 percent of the way toward our objective is good,” Rutherford said.
He added that by this week, 87 percent of all teachers in the county currently engaged in face to face educating will have gotten their first shot.
Staff in Kalamazoo City Schools will get their shots later, because the district has decided to stick with virtual learning for the rest of this school year.
