WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan played a role in the Trump impeachment trial Thursday.
Democratic Manager Jamie Ruskin said Trump kept up a steady stream of tweets attacking Governor Whitmer when she was critical of the Trump response to the pandemic last year. He says those tweets encouraged extremist groups to stage two armed incursions at the State Capital.
“The siege of the Michigan state house was effectively a state-level dress rehearsal for the siege of the U.S. Capitol that Trump incited on January 6th”
Ruskin told Senators that when Trump did not denounce the events, the extremists felt free to escalate their plans by plotting to kidnap and execute Governor Whitmer.
“…and what did Donald Trump do as the President of the United States? He further inflamed them by continuing to attack the Governor who was the object of their hatred in this kidnapping conspiracy.”
He says the Michigan connection was used to demonstrate that not only could Trump incite supporters to violence, but also how far they were willing to go. Donald Trump’s Attorneys will begin their defense at noon today.
