VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, officials with the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department announced the identification of a COVID-19 variant in one patient.
The variant, B.1.1.7., is believed to originate from the United Kingdom, and is thought to be more contagious than the established variety. Officials say the identification was made Sunday.
At this time, further details about this individual are unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
With this news, Van Buren County health officials are reminding residents to follow established health guidelines to slow the spread of the virus.
- Get vaccinated for COVID-19 when available and eligible
- Wear a mask around others
- Stay six feet apart from others

The first Michigan case of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant was identified in Washtenaw County in January. The news of this discovery follows Monday’s announcement of three new cases in Kalamazoo County.
Additionally, health officials in Calhoun County say the variant has recently been discovered in some patients. More information on that news can be found here.
