KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s City Utilities are taking steps to help low income families survive the COVID-19 pandemic.
Director Jim Baker says they began suspending water shutoffs due to unpaid bills last year.
“Really, that kind of helped families deal with the pandemic and not worry about the drinking water. We are going to continue that program for the rest of 2021.”
He announced this week that they will be partnering with Consumers Energy to help low income customers reduce their bills by replacing inefficient appliances and plumbing.
“Increased usage due to aging plumbing, inefficient fixtures and leaks. With this program, we’ll provide customers a chance to resolve those problems”
Baker also says residents will have to prove they need the help to be eligible for the programs.
