Farmers who find a USDA survey in their mail may not respond to it for several reasons. They may not trust the methods used or their accuracy or they may simply be too busy to provide data for which the survey is searching.
USDA says the response rate was declining until the last couple of years.
Then, Lance Honig with the National Ag Statistics Service says things began to turn around as his agency began a push to get the word out via farm groups and the media that each farmer’s response is important.
Honig says now that the decline has leveled off, the focus becomes how to get the response rate to move up again.
