KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Tuesday, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners reviewed its priorities for the year 2021.
According to officials, the county board’s agenda includes increasing housing options, keeping the Justice Facility project on track, and strengthening Kalamazoo County Governments diversity and inclusion policies.
“Our residents come first, which is why we listen to their feedback and engage with the community so we can ensure Kalamazoo County Government is providing quality and consistent programs and services,” Kalamazoo County Board Chair Tracy Hall said in a statement. “Voters made it clear they support the county helping residents obtain permanent, affordable housing, which is why we are committed to creating solutions.”
County officials say the number of people and families experiencing homelessness in Kalamazoo has grown exponentially since 2019, and this challenge has been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
On November 3, voters approved a millage to extend and expand the Homes for All program, which will help more residents find affordable housing.
“We’re proud of our employees at Kalamazoo County government,” Kalamazoo County Board Vice Chair Tami Rey said of the board’s diversity goal. “The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners will continue to prioritize a diverse and inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued.”
In regards to Kalamazoo County’s new Justice Facility, which is slated for completion in 2023, officials say it will create many local construction jobs. Upon completion, officials say it will “streamline justice operations, preserve taxpayer dollars and lay the groundwork for a more efficient system in Kalamazoo County.”
“Kalamazoo County’s goal is to provide equitable programs and unmatched services to promote the health and safety of all Kalamazoo County residents, all in the pursuit of extraordinary governance,” Kalamazoo County Administrator Tracie Moored said. “I applaud the Board of Commissioners for outlining an aggressive agenda this year.”
This outline of priorities comes after the new Commission had its first meeting of the year earlier this month. During that meeting, Tracy Hall was reelected to the position of Board Chair.
“Board Chair Tracy Hall has pledged to help improve the lives of Kalamazoo County residents, and so far, she has kept her word,” District 2 Commissioner Zac Bauer said. “I am proud to be part of this new era of Kalamazoo County government and will continue to work with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to ensure we provide services that promote the equity, health and well-being of everyone in Kalamazoo County.”
