KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, the City of Kalamazoo announced that area residents are invited to participate in an independent study of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s (KDPS) response to protests over the summer.
The study, conducted by California-based OIR group, will include two community input sessions that will take place in January. According to City officials, these sessions will allow community members to share experiences publicly.
The input sessions will be held on Monday, January 11 and Monday, January 25, both starting at 6 p.m.
Both sessions will be held via Zoom and streamed live to YouTube and Facebook. Community members are invited to join the Zoom webinar to share comments and experiences they wish to be considered as part of the review.

“This review is an important step to move our community forward,” Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manger for the City of Kalamazoo Dorla Bonner said in a statement. “Although the City of Kalamazoo doesn’t have an active role in this review, we do encourage people participate in these input sessions or contact OIR directly to share their feelings and experiences from these events.”

The City contracted with OIR Group to complete an independent assessment of Kalamazoo Public Safety’s response to protests that occurred on May 30 – June 2, 2020, and on August 15, 2020.
The group was chosen with input from the Citizens Public Safety Review and Appeals Board.
