KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Tuesday, Western Michigan University (WMU) President Edward Montgomery announced that the return to WMU’s campus in January has been delayed.
In a letter released to the WMU community, Montgomery explained that the decision has been made due to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) revising its emergency order, which will be in effect until Friday, January 15.
With that revision in mind, Montgomery says Governor Gretchen Whitmer has asked that all colleges and universities wait until Monday, January 18 before in-person classes take place. There has also been a request to delay student move-in to the preceding weekend.
Distance-learning classes will now begin on Monday, January 11, with in-person classes beginning the following Tuesday, January 19, immediately following Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Residence halls will now reopen on Saturday, January 16, about one week later than originally planned. Students are asked to complete appropriate paperwork before returning to campus, and students who have traveled for the holidays should wait until January 16 to return.
Additionally, Montgomery noted that students living in residence halls will receive financial consideration related to room and board, with more information to follow from the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
“While recent news about COVID-19 vaccines raises our hopes for the future, it’s critically important that we continue those practices that prevent coronavirus transmission – wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from those around you, washing your hands frequently and limiting in-person interactions,” Montgomery said in the letter.
