KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) announced that the Meijer Corporation has donated $3,000 to help Kalamazoo-area families in need for the holiday season.
In a written statement, Sergeant Andrew Werkema of KDPS said that normally, the “Shop with a Public Safety Officer” program would allow area children to interact with officers in a positive setting. However, that program could not take place this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
As an alternative plan, the department says it has instead identified families in need and will be assisting them this holiday season.
Werkema also stated that Meijer has sponsored the event for over 10 years.
The news of this donation from Meijer comes as the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the results of its own holiday fundraising activities, which also included a large donation from Meijer.
