KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Five days after the first shipments left the Pfizer manufacturing facility in Portage, employees at both Bronson Healthcare and Ascension Borgess Hospital began receiving the new coronavirus vaccine Thursday.
Ascension Borgess President Peter Bergmann said, “This is the beginning of the end of this pandemic.”
The first shipments of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine was delivered to both hospitals Thursday morning.
The vaccines were part of the initial Michigan allotment of 84,250 doses. Hospital staffs across the state are among the first to receive the vaccines under statewide distribution plans.
Behind hospital personnel, Kalamazoo County Health Department officials say they will focus on vaccinating first responders.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Thursday reported 4,024 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the total to 450,776 since March.
The state reported 190 more deaths from the virus. Of those, 125 were identified through a vital records review. As of Thursday, 11,208 people have died from COVID-19 in Michigan.
There are now 9,949 reported cases in Kalamazoo County, with 196 deaths.
