PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Even though his base salary didn’t increase, the Portage Public Schools Board of Education voted this week to extend Superintendent Mark Bielang’s contract and increase his tax-sheltered annuity.
The vote came after a “highly effective” rating from the board at a meeting in June.
Bielang’s tax-sheltered annuity was increased from $48,674 to $52,915, based upon a 2.16% increase to the value of his base salary. The superintendent’s base salary did not increase and hasn’t since he began at the helm in 2012. Bielang’s annual salary is $195,000.
Bielang’s contract was extended to June 2023 as well. He came to the district eight years ago from Paw Paw Public Schools.
Board President Randy Van Antwerp said in June that over the last year, Bielang has “successfully led our bond construction projects that are on time and under budget.”
