PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday, officials with Portage Public Schools (PPS) announced the passing of School Board Member Joanne Willson.
According to the announcement, Willson passed away early Wednesday morning. That comes after 10 years of serving on the board, having first been appointed in 2010.
Officials say Willson was active at the state level as well serving the Michigan Association of School Boards. She served on many committees, attended numerous conferences and training to achieve a Level 3 Award of Distinction from the organization.
She was also an active member of the Portage community, officials add. Her involvement and service in a number of community clubs, boards, and organizations, such as the Little League organization, gave her a unique perspective as a school board member.
“Joanne was a fierce advocate for students and staff,” Superintendent Mark Bielang said in a statement. “She will be greatly missed, and we ask that you please keep her family in your thoughts during this difficult time.”
Services for Willson are pending at this time, however, her family anticipates a memorial service to be scheduled this summer.
