KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — City officials in Kalamazoo are clarifying a recently-approved home security system program meant to help curb gun violence in the area.
During a virtual meeting Monday night, Commissioners discussed the matter at length, which is in the form of a four-pronged strategy. $100,000 were approved for allocation, with a suggested $25,000 dedicated to those four initiatives. Although Commissioners agreed that the proposal was a good start, they said more work needs to be done, and will be done.
In regards to the home security system proposal, $25,000 are allocated to that program, but it’s still under development at this time, as are the other three.
The following information was presented in the memo at the Monday City Commission meeting specifically about the home security systems program, which would be in the form of Ring cameras:
“Funds are proposed to purchase security systems to offer to residents. Initially security system distribution will be focused within the block club initiative (in the Northside, Edison and Eastside Neighborhoods) to those who wish to participate and could be expanded to larger areas that have experienced the most gun activity. This program is under development while staff work through a number of details.”
Since the program is still under development, the City says it is not distributing security systems at this time.
More details about the implementation and timing of the programs will be presented at the December 14 Kalamazoo City Commission budget meeting at 6:00 p.m., according to officials.
