KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools will bring back the two police officers they have stationed in high schools when classes resume, despite calls to keep them away from kids.
The demands rolled in after the George Floyd killing earlier this year and calls to defund police. Opponents said the money should be spent on counselors instead.
But during last night’s School Board Meeting, there was overwhelming support from members of the public to keep them.
The school district has had two School Resource Officers, one at Kalamazoo Central High and the other at Loy Norrix High School.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri said she conducted surveys that showed support among students and staff to keep the officers, particularly by teachers. Around 30% of the students were polled.
The board voted 6 to 1 to renew the contract.
