From the Indiana and Ohio border up into the thumb soils are classified as abnormally dry in the latest drought monitor survey. Elsewhere, moisture levels remain adequate across Michigan. In the bigger picture, the Southeast and Middle Atlantic states are the wettest thanks mostly to an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season. However, the further west you go the drier it gets and 2020 which early-on looked like a turn-around year after a series bone dry years is now anything but. As we enter December only four percent of the nation’s topsoil moisture is described as surplus while 42 to 44 percent is characterized as being short to very short. States such as Maryland, Delaware and Florida come in at 40 to 50 percent above normal as far as topsoil moisture is concerned.
