KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There will be a new sort of play area for kids and their families coming to downtown Kalamazoo.
Children’s Nature Playscape on Bronson Park has secured the necessary permits to begin land development for its downtown playscape located at 302 Academy Street, between the First Congregational and the First Baptist churches of Kalamazoo, across from Bronson Park.
As an initial phase, the former home of First Reformed Church of Kalamazoo will be razed. Demolition is expected to begin the week of November 23, during which time access to the site will be restricted.
In its place, a green space will be developed adjacent to Bronson Park. Future plans will include a 130-foot by 130-foot nature playscape dedicated to serving the needs of the city’s youth under the age of 10. Organizers say that includes more than 1,500 children ages two to 10 who attend 18 childcare and preschool locations within just 10 blocks of the future playscape.
“Our hope is to provide a safe and accessible space that serves young children of all abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds with a place to play and explore — a space that allows them to interact freely and creatively with the natural world,” said Jody Brylinsky, Children’s Nature Playscape on Bronson Park board chair.
The process of gathering playscape design input from the community began in October 2019 and will continue through 2021.
