OTSEGO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Otsego Middle School in Allegan County is one of five schools in the U.S. to help kick off a national pay-it-forward campaign called Hope Handoff, through Capturing Kids’ Hearts.
The Leadworthy (formerly Teen Leadership) classes had to come up with a way to give back and affirm others. The 7th grade classes typically take a field trip to Wishbone Pet Rescue in Allegan to volunteer, donate food, toys and treats.
School officials say even though they weren’t able to take the trip this year, the students decided they could still help out. Each student made a sign to hang up in the halls of the Middle School, then they launched a week-long donation drive.
The students collected several boxes of donations from classmates, monetary donations, and a cart full of donations from Family Farm and Fleet in Otsego.
In addition, the students each wrote an affirmation to the workers at the shelter to thank them for all they do. The students will now nominate another school to keep the giving going.
