BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Due to budget challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Battle Creek has been forced to eliminate 26 positions from its budget.
The changes will take effect for some on January 1, 2021 and for others on July 1, 2021 which is the start of the 2021-2022 budget year.
City Manager Rebecca Fleury says this is the hardest thing she has done as city manager.
The City Commission approved a budget amendment on Tuesday which reflect the elimination of the 26 positions and projects which uses over $553,000 from the fund balance for the current fiscal year.
Fleury says the job eliminations, “have nothing to do with our wonderful team and their skills, and everything to do with our budgetary shortfalls; I must do what is in the best interest of the city’s financial health.”
