At this time, he is still in jail on charges of first-degree child abuse and on open murder. His lawyer’s request to have him released on bond for mental health treatment was denied by a Calhoun County judge.
Kregling will be back in court on November 23.
This is only the latest investigation of a child death in Battle Creek. Police are also searching for 18-year-old Henry Lewis Jones Jr. in connection to a case that occurred Saturday.

A Battle Creek man is being charged for the death of his 8-month-old child.
29-year-old Kyle Kregling was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of first-degree child abuse, but now the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking an open murder charge.
On Monday, responding officers were called to the 100 block of West Territorial Road after Kregling told authorities that his child fell out of bed. However, after further investigating, authorities believed the child’s injuries were not consistent with an accidental fall.
The child died at Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo shortly after Kregling was arraigned. An autopsy ruled the child’s death a homicide.
Kregling began to change his version of the story. Police executed a search warrant at the home and determined that the cause of the child’s injuries were likely physical abuse.
The case is still under investigation and Kregling’s bond is set at $150,000.
