What’s in a name? Plenty, according to U-S agriculture groups ready to export goods into places such as the European Union. Common food and wine terms like champagne or bologna or parmesan have come under increased pressure due to their name since they’re not produced in the geographic area where the product originated. This week 111 members of Congress drafted a letter asking the U.S. Trade Representative and Department of Agriculture to make safeguarding of common food names and wine terms an essential ingredient in future trade negotiations. The National Milk Producers Federation CEO says America’s dairy farmers have been harmed by the EU’s attempt to limit market opportunities for U.S. dairy products.
