CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a Clarendon Township man was injured Monday after being dragged by a tractor.
Around 11:40 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 700 block of 23 Mile Road near Homer for a report of a personal injury accident. The initial reports indicated that the man had been trapped underneath the tractor with serious injuries.
On scene, deputies located a 47-year-old male who had been extricated from underneath the tractor.
Through investigation, deputies learned that the victim had been driving the tractor when it had run out of gas. He left it in the roadway and returned with a gasoline, a truck and trailer. He parked the truck and trailer in front of the tractor as it was filled with gas.
Afterwards, he reached inside the tractor to start it. As the engine turned over, the tractor lurched forward as it had been left in gear. The male was thrown from the area he was standing on and became entangled in the tractor wheels.
It then ran over the victim and continued to drag him approximately 300′ underneath while the tractor was pushing the truck and trailer forward into a field. Once the truck left the roadway, the tractor stopped. Although trapped and injured, the victim was able to retrieve a cell phone and contact a neighbor who was able to assist in extricating him.
The victim was then flown by AirCare to Jackson for treatment. The injuries do not appear life-threatening at this time. Calhoun County Accident Reconstruction was contacted in order to process the scene, and Calhoun County Sheriff Deputies were assisted by the Homer Fire Department.
