The word from Southwest Michigan Extension agents indicates U-pick and farm market apple sales have been brisk during October thanks to poorer crops in Indiana. At last word Red Delicious, IdaRed, and Fuji were about all picked. Higher heat unit accumulation has moved the region about one week ahead of those to our north and east. Windy conditions lately have been responsible for instances of apple drop. As expected this time of year, brown marmorated stink bugs are moving into buildings. Watercore, characterized by water-soaked interior of the fruit, has been reported. The condition can result in poorer apple shelf life.
