ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that one suspect is in custody after a chase that ended in the Kalamazoo River Wednesday.
Just before 8:30 a.m., a deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle parked along Monroe Road, just west of the City of Allegan.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the deputy attempted to make contact. After a short time, the deputy decided to end the pursuit.
Not long after that, the suspect vehicle crashed into two other police cruisers that were responding to the pursuit. The suspect then drove off a steep bank into the Kalamazoo River near the Allegan County Fairgrounds.
An Allegan County Sheriff Sergeant and two Michigan State Police Troopers went into the cold waters and pulled the suspect from the vehicle as it sank. The Allegan County Dive Team later retrieved the vehicle while it was submerged in the water.
Further details were not immediately made available. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
