EAST LANSING, MI — Former Michigan State University athletic director Merritt Norvell has died. He was the first black athletic director in MSU history from 1995 to 1999.
Norvell was a running back at Wisconsin in the 1960s and was a member of the Badgers’ 1960 Rose Bowl team. He oversaw three Hall of Fame coaches at MSU in Nick Saban, Tom Izzo and Ron Mason.
He also was the executive director of the National Association for Coaching Equity and Development, which sought to develop, educate and advocate for minority coaches.
Funeral arrangements are pending, according to Norvell’s family.
