CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies say a single car/deer crash resulted in several other chain reaction crashes on I-94 Sunday night.
A 19-year-old from Indiana was traveling westbound on I-94 around 9 p.m. when she struck a deer and spun-out near mile marker 105. The car was disabled in the middle of the highway and the teen and her 19-year-old passenger from Ontario, Canada quickly exited the vehicle and moved from the highway.
A 58-year-old Lansing man was also traveling on the freeway and crashed when he could not avoid the disabled vehicle. The driver and the two women in the car, a 58-year-old and a 60-year-old both from Lansing, were taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say that while these two vehicles were spinning, three other vehicles that were attempting to avoid the crash were struck.
Then a 6th vehicle stopped to avoid the crash but was re-ended by a 7th vehicle.
No other drivers were injured during the incident. First responders shut down I-94 after I-69, exit 108, for about an hour as crews removed the seven vehicles involved.
Investigators say alcohol, texting nor speed appear to be factors.
