KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Bronson Healthcare is reminding area residents that it is time to get the flu (influenza) vaccination.
Officials say that while it is important to receive the flu vaccination each fall, this year is especially critical due to the ongoing presence of COVID-19.
There are overlapping symptoms that COVID-19 shares with the flu and without laboratory testing to definitively identify the virus, they may be mistaken for one another. Additionally, getting immunized against the flu can help prevent hospitals from experiencing a surge of patients needing to be hospitalized for influenza at the same time as patients with COVID-19.
The flu vaccine can prevent influenza, reduce the severity of symptoms, shorten the duration of illness, reduce missed work and school days and reduce the risk of hospitalization. The flu virus can have varying symptoms, including a fever, cough, muscle aches, headache and sore throat. In more serious situations, the virus can cause complications, some of which can be life-threatening and result in death.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that everyone six months of age and older get vaccinated each year. The vaccine is available at various Bronson locations. Fees vary based on the location, type of flu vaccine and insurance coverage.
Current Bronson patients can call their primary care office to schedule an appointment to get the vaccine. Those who don’t have a primary care provider can also call a Bronson Care Advisor at (269)-341-7788 for help finding a provider and location that best fits their needs.
Several Bronson locations, county health departments, community organizations and retail stores offer walk-in options for flu vaccines. It’s advised patients call ahead to ensure inventory and check if an appointment is needed. To see Bronson walk-in flu clinic options, visit bronsonhealth.com/flu.
If an individual starts experiencing flu-like symptoms (including fever, chills, cough or shortness of breath), they should stay home and drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest, avoid contact with other people and take one of the following next steps:
- Call a Bronson Care Advisor at (269) 341-7788
- Schedule a BronsonConnect Video Visit
- Contact your primary care provider via telephone or through Bronson MyChart
Officials add that, because flu and COVID-19 symptoms are so similar, it is important to self-isolate for at least 14 days. If you live with others, even pets, you should try to find an area of the home away from others to quarantine.
Bronson’s reminder comes as other Kalamazoo-area health officials are urging vaccinations this month.
