KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The candidates running to represent the 61st District in the Michigan House of Representatives are squaring off in a debate on 590 AM and 106.9 FM WKZO.
On Tuesday, Democrat Christine Morse and Republican Bronwyn Haltom joined the WKZO team to record a 30 minute debate.
The candidates covered topics like healthcare, Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders and the coronavirus pandemic, security at the state capitol, in-person learning, the environment, and other pressing issues.
The debate will air on WKZO Friday, October 16th immediately after the CBS News at noon and then it will re-air Saturday, October 17th at 10:30 a.m.
It can be heard on 590 AM and 106.9 FM WKZO, online on our website here, or viewed on our Facebook page. A recap of the debate will also be posted in the podcast section of our website.
The candidates are running to fill the seat of term-limited Republican State Representative Brandt Iden. The 61st District in Kalamazoo County covers the city of Portage, the villages of Schoolcraft and Vicksburg, and the townships of Oshtemo, Texas, Prairie Ronde and Schoolcraft.
Morse is the current Kalamazoo County Commissioner of District 9 and “a mother, spouse of a Navy Veteran, former attorney, and cancer survivor,” according to her website. Morse received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and has a law degree from Wayne State University Law School.
The race is also a rivalry between the maize and blue and the green and white.
Haltom attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College and then transferred to the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor’s degree. Haltom owns a small marketing firm and also worked with the Trump administration as a political appointee in the White House as the western regional political director.
In addition to their on-air debate, MLive teamed up with Vote411.org to cover where the two candidates stand on a variety of issues. That interview can be viewed here.
