OKEMOS, MI — Wayfair made an announcement in the fall of 2019 it would bring 500 call center jobs to Meridian Township, but the online retailer has notified Meridian Township that the Boston-based company will not occupy the planned commercial space along Hagadorn Road.
Wayfair planned to fix up and lease 62,000 square feet of office space from the Eyde Company at 4700 S. Hagadorn Road in Meridian Township, according to a Merdian Township press release.
“Wayfair made it clear that their model, at this point, is to operate their Call Center from the personal living rooms of their associates. Certainly this is a blow to the entire Lansing region,” stated Ron Styka, Meridian Township Supervisor.
The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) worked with Wayfair’s Site Selection Group for over a year conducting market data analysis, site visits and strategic discussions on behalf of the region. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) also approved over $2 million dollars in grants to assist in Wayfair’s job creation and investment.
“We will continue to work with the owners of the commercial space and LEAP to bring economic activity to the region,” said Amber Clark, Meridian Township Neighborhoods & Economic Development Director.
