KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: Tuesday, the Michigan State Police, along with other local law enforcement agencies, have arrested a suspect after surrounding a house in Kalamazoo.
According to a statement from MSP, officers were searching for a suspect who had multiple warrants out of Portage. The area between Cumberland Street and Yucca Avenue had been shut down.
Police say unknown occupants were also present inside the residence upon arrival, however they cooperated and peacefully walked out on their own.
The nearby Kalamazoo Central High School did not experience a lockdown because the situation had been contained, and there was no danger to civilians, WWMT reported.
Police attempted to persuade the suspect to exit but he refused. The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team was ultimately activated and responded to the area to assist. After several hours of negotiating with the suspect, he eventually walked out of the residence and surrendered to law enforcement officers.
The suspect, a 23-year-old Kalamazoo male, was taken into custody on the following charges:
- armed robbery
- felony firearm
- assault with intent to rob armed
- felony firearms – possession by a felon
- assault with intent to do great bodily harm
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. His identity is being withheld pending his arraignment set for Wednesday, October 14.
