PENN TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Cass County Sheriff’s deputies say one of their K9’s helped track down a motorcyclist who was injured in a crash over the weekend.
It happened around 8 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Dutch Settlement Road and East Street in Penn Township near Little Fish Lake.
When first responders arrived they located the crash scene but no victim.
Dispatchers then received a call that a man walked up a driveway in the 16000 block of Marcellus Highway but then left in an unknown direction.
Authorities launched K9 Faust who located the injured driver in a thick wooded area about a quarter of a mile from the crash. He was lying in a ditch with an obvious head injury.
The victim, identified as 28-year-old Travis Herman from Marcellus, was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been released.
It is believed that Herman was traveling eastbound on Dutch Settlement Road when he ran off the roadway and struck several trees.
Investigators say he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and speed may have been a factor. They are still looking into the incident.
