BERTRAND TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police say a man has been cited after he attempted to drive around a train crossing barrier, causing a car/train crash in Berrien County.
It happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday on the tracks over Mayflower Road, north of US-12 near JD’s Truck and Liquor Stop in Bertrand Township, south of Buchanan.
Authorities believe the driver of the 2000 Cadillac El Dorado was traveling northbound on Mayflower Road when he attempted to drive around the stop arms, disregarding the train crossing signals and warning alarms.
The train, which was heading eastbound from Chicago traveling about 90 miles per hour, was unable to completely brake before the collision and came to a stop about a quarter mile from the initial point of the crash.
When first responders arrived the driver had fled the scene, but he was later located at a local hospital. The 36-year-old man from Berrien County suffered only minor injuries and was issued two citations for leaving the scene of a crash and disregarding train crossing signals.
