VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, Van Buren County Clerk Suzie Roehm released a statement regarding a fraudulent mask order document circulating on social media and in various counties.
According to Roehm, the letter appears to be a response to a Freedom of Informaion Act (FOIA) request on the wearing of masks. The letter is also signed with her name.
According to the fake letter, under the recent Michigan Supreme Court ruling that nullifies Governor Whitmer’s COVID-19 Executive Orders, businesses can no longer deny service or entry to customers who do not wear masks.
The letter further states that failure to comply could result in fines or imprisonment for the violator in question. It also says that the letter can be shown to security or whoever it may concern, and anyone can request a copy by calling the Clerk’s office.
“It is unknown to me who allegedly received this letter or in what manner, however, it is being shared on social media,” Roehm said in a statement. “The County Clerk does not have the authority to make an interpretation of an Executive Order or provide legal advice. I did not draft or distribute this letter. This is unauthorized use of the name and office of the Van Buren County Clerk.”
Roehm adds that the matter has been forwarded to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department for further investigation.
This comes as Michigan health officials announced their own emergency order Monday for the purposes of maintaining safety precautions that had already been established by previous Executive Orders.
