There is $800 thousand in USDA funds targeted for a Michigan wetland mitigation banking project through the Wetland Mitigation Banking Program. The effort helps conservation partners develop or set up mitigation banks to help producers maintain eligibility for USDA programs. To qualify, a producer has to comply with wetland conservation provisions by affirming they won’t impact wetlands on their property. In situations where avoidance or on-site wetland mitigation is a challenge, the Farm Bill allows farmers to mitigate conversation activities off-site through purchase of mitigation banking credits. Nationally, USDA has awarded $5 million for eight wetland mitigation banking projects.
