KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — As the Kalamazoo Public School district continues to work through any remaining technical issues during this unusual school year, the Board of Trustees is sharing some good news about last school year.
Despite the pandemic and the abrupt end to in-person classes, the Class of 2020 still set another milestone for Kalamazoo schools.
There were 734 graduates in the district, which is the highest number of graduates to date since The Kalamazoo Promise was announced 15 years ago.
KPS Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri made that announcement during their virtual board meeting on Tuesday.
“That number represents nearly a 62 percent increase and highest number of graduates to date in the post-Promise era and is the seventh year in a row with an increase,” Raichoudhuri said. “The pandemic didn’t stop our students from performing at their best and our district from providing the supports it has committed to providing to ensure that our students are successful.”
Here are the number of graduates broken down by each school:
- Kalamazoo Central High School — 319 graduates
- Loy Norrix High School — 284 graduates
- Phoenix High School — 113 graduates
- Kalamazoo Innovative Learning Program — 18 graduates
According to a statement from KPS Director of Marketing and Communications Susan Coney administrators cite efforts such as curriculum improvements, best practices with instruction, enhanced parent and guardian involvement, and more extensive collaborations with community partners as key factors for the higher graduation numbers among students.
Dr. Raichoudhuri announced during their meeting that she will also hold a number of input sessions in the month of October as they still plan to partially reopen schools at the end of November.
