LANSING, MI — The Lewis Cass building in downtown Lansing has a brand new name today. Governor Whitmer and others took the wraps off the Elliott-Larsen Building, removing the name of a former slave-owning governor from the building.
It is the first time a state building has been named for an African-American woman with former Representative Daisy Elliott of Detroit. The other name is former Representative Republican Mel Larsen of Oakland County and the two have their names on the state’s 1977 Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
Cass is a former governor of Michigan.
