KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two former employees of Lakeside Academy in Kalamazoo will head to trial for the wrongful restraint and eventual death a teen.
On Thursday, 28-year-old Zachary Solis and 48-year-old Heather McLogan were both bound over to circuit court on all of their counts of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse for the death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredericks.
Fredericks was held down by about six to seven staff members for about 12 minutes after he threw a sandwich in the cafeteria on April 29th. He died from complications of restraint asphyxia two days later and the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the cause of his death a homicide.
Solis, a former youth counselor, was allegedly one of the two Lakeside staff members who laid on top of Fredericks’ abdomen during the restraint. He was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of second-degree child abuse for his role in Fredericks’ death.
McLogan, the former director of nursing at the now-closed facility, was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of second-degree child abuse for failing to seek medical care in a timely manner.
The third employee charged, 47-year-old Michael Mosely is scheduled for his preliminary hearing on October 21st.
It’s still unclear if more former employees could be charged for their part in Fredericks’ death.
