ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The St. Joseph County Prosecutor is avoiding jail time for violating his bond following a drunk driving arrest.
On Thursday, Prosecutor John McDonough pleaded not guilty to the bond violation after he was caught buying alcohol several times at stores in the area. His bond terms did forbid him from purchasing or consuming alcohol or visiting places like bars and liquor stores.
While he is avoiding any jail time for his bond violation, McDonough has been ordered to follow an Alcoholics Anonymous program four times a week. His attorney says he has already been getting counseling.
McDonough was arrested back in May after he crashed into a fence on Lovers Lane in Lockport Township near Three Rivers.
He was later arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail for operating while under the influence of alcohol and for having open intoxicants in his vehicle. However, a 911 call McDonough made to dispatchers that night had him claiming the crash was caused by a coughing fit.
The prosecutor has held office in St. Joseph County for nearly 12 years, having first been elected to the role in 2008. McDonough’s term expires in January, as fellow Republican David Marvin defeated him in the August primary.
His next court appearance will be virtually on September 29th.
