KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An armed suspect is now in custody following a six hour police standoff on Kalamazoo’s Eastside.
Public Safety officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of East Main Street near Trimble Avenue around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a man with a gun.
The victim got into an altercation with a known person which then escalated when the suspect produced a firearm and shot at the victim. The victim was able to escape the home and alert first responders.
The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations team were called in to assist public safety officers as they secured the area and applied for a search warrant.
Authorities exchanged phone calls with the suspect, who refused to exit the home, and after about six hours, officers entered and the 37-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested without further incident.
The suspect was taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail where he awaits arraignment on several weapons and assault charges.
Officers did not say if the victim was injured during the shooting and no other details were released.
