KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The second annual Fall Bike Celebration Weekend is starting this Friday, September 18 through September 20.
Officials say that this weekend will highlight attractions in and around the village of Vicksburg and southwest Michigan. These attractions will consist of popular repeat activities, including ice cream at Apple Knockers Ice Cream Parlor on the shores of Sunset Lake, as well as a scenic bicycle tour on Sunday.
A kid-friendly route will traverse the Vicksburg Recreational Trail through the woods to its point of latest completion on the border of Portage. Longer routes include options for riding to Shipshewana, IN and back.
At the end of the weekend, $1,750 in cash prizes will be announced in Bike Friendly Kalamazoo’s (BFK) Public Bike Art Competition Award Ceremony on the grounds of the Vicksburg Historic Village.
Musical entertainment will be available, as well. An open-air lawn chair benefit concert performed by the Schlitz Creek Bluegrass Band will be hosted at Gilmore Car Museum as a way to highlight its collection of restored bicycles.
New for 2020, riders will start and finish on the grounds of the restored Vicksburg Historic Village, which is opening a number of its buildings to the public throughout the weekend.
“We welcome cyclists and everyone who participates in any of the attractions during the Fall Bike Celebration, in any way they can,” Vicksburg Village President Bill Adams said in a statement. “We appreciate the support of the Vicksburg Foundation, generous sponsors, and wonderful in-kind supporters in making this great fall bicycling oriented weekend possible.”
Some activities are free, while others require waivers. Some may require children to be accompanied by an adult. The latest updates can be found at the official scheduling page.
“This year’s fall bicycle celebration takes into account public health precautions in consultation with official authorities,” chair and president of Bike Friendly Kalamazoo Paul Selden said in a statement. “We are limiting attendance and staggering start times. Yet, in many ways, this year some events will reach even more people due to their web and/or hybrid formats. BFK’s Bike Art Competition has been digital from the start, gathering virtual attention nation-wide. The bluegrass concert will be open air, hosted at the Gilmore Car Museum North America’s largest of its kind. We’ll have a number of fascinating virtual presentations. People are welcome to enjoy the Fall Bike Celebration at any level they feel comfortable with.”
